TMR Game – Week 10

Welcome to Week 10 of the Too Much Racing Game!

Apologies for my recent absence and I hope it wasn’t a hindrance, and thanks to Sebastian for compiling some unofficial results for last week! You’ll be pleased to hear I agree with his figures, I will include them here in case you didn’t see the link to those results so in this post you’ll see results from the last two weeks.

Just a word of warning, this is a WRC week and that means an early cut-off. The rally actually runs from Thursday to Saturday. I think it is quite harsh to have everyone pick by Thursday morning especially since I was slightly delayed with this post, so I propose a closing point of 6am UK time Friday morning (11 minutes before that day’s running begins). This does mean people entering Thursday will have a distinct advantage but I don’t know what else to suggest. Thoughts?

All you have to do is reply to this post and pick up to 10 drivers! The only limit? No more than 7 in one race.

The cutoff is the morning of Friday 2nd April at 5.59am BST (British Summer Time = GMT+1).

How To Enter

1. Reply to this post.

2. List up to 10 drivers, with no more than 7 from a single event.

3. Send your entry before the stated deadline, usually some time on a Friday. You can make as many changes as you like until the closing point, I’ll take your last entry.

Most weeks feature 2 or 3 races, some weeks may have more than that and some may only have one. There’s not a rule stating you have to choose from each race, any combination of up to 10 drivers is accepted.

In the Sprint Cup there was another win for Johnson and continued good form for Kenseth, while down in Sebring for the ALMS it was a Peugeot sweep with Aston Martin Racing third. A thin prototype field suffering reliability issues saw the GT2 frontrunners take 4 of the top 10 positions.

I don’t think too many will have predicted this NASCAR result as Johnson finishes a little way down and Hamlin took the win. It was a similar story with Kubica’s Renault taking 2nd in Melbourne. Penske took 3 of the top 4 spots in the IndyCar race with only Justin Wilson spoiling their party.

Sebastian took Week 8 with a superb 411 points, well done! Speedgeek wasn’t far back scoring identical ALMS points. Both took the gamble of picking several Peugeot drivers and they were rewarded when the team took a 1-2 finish. James unfortunately didn’t enter and his carryovers were of no use.

James redeems himself though by outscoring the field for Week 9! Sean was the only player to correctly pick Denny Hamlin for NASCAR and we all chose Jimmie Johnson who had a relatively bad week, while a couple of notable drivers retired and only scored single-digits.

We have a new leader! James’ non-entry slips him down the order to allow The Speedgeek to take the front, while Sebastian takes a surge forwards into 2nd position with that good Wk8 score. I was the only player other than James to lose a position..

Week 10

This weekend we have the F1 Malaysian Grand Prix and the WRC Rally Jordan. I assume you’re all familiar with F1, if you’re looking for an entry list for this week’s WRC you can find it here and specifically this PDF (first-named is the driver). Unfortunately there are only 10 WRC-class cars, the rest of the field are Production WRC entrants or runners from the Middle East Rally Championship, but you can still pick from those if you think they’ll score well. Stage times should appear here throughout the weekend.

  2. A Thursday morning cut-off would be OK as long as all nine of us know it is early and you know we all know. Obviously, RG has posted and I know. May I suggest you e-mail the other six to ask them to let you know they are aware of the situation and if you get a full set of responses, add a note to the post. (Lets give Jackie and Dank the extra day whatever.) In the meantime, if any of the gang see this, if they could post a comment that they are aware?

  4. I’ll put my ten together later on, but just a heads up that the weather forecast for Malaysia is pretty much a repeat of last year. The BBC team worked through 3 thunderstorms while setting their equipment up the past couple of days.

  17. I’m less than an hour over. I often make fantasy picks late Thursday night before Friday deadlines. Didn’t look at this deadline until now, and I virtually never look at WRC news. I have no excuse especially because Sebastian e-mailed me… I handicapped myself by not looking at anything related to this weekend’s rally, and just picking five generally consistent rally guys.

  18. What can I say? The post has been up since Tuesday. I don’t mind if you want to leave your picks until later but surely the post is worth a cursory read to check the cutoffs. But I admit I made an error on the Thursday start so we all make mistakes.

    Now, you say it is late. On my WordPress Dashboard it shows 5.50am which is 10mins within. This is probably because I changed the timezone to reflect DST, but I can’t be sure.

    I’ll accept the entry for these reasons:
    – it is only marginally late (if it had been over an hour you’d be out of luck);
    – I can’t be 100% sure it is late;
    – we’ve only got a handful of players;
    – I also made an error with the cutoff time(if I hadn’t, I may not have been so favourable);

    All I’ll say about WRC is that you’re as handicapped by not following it as I am with GrandAm in Andy’s game!

  20. What the almighty is going on with WRC? It makes a mockery of making predictions. After all these years, just how difficult is it to rotate the starting order of the top contenders across the stages so road-position advantages and disadvantages are approximately shared out?

    I do not want to seem bitter. I should have picked Latvala if I wanted more points and I veiw points I lose on Ogier as one of those things – unlucky and stupid but with some of the good luck I have had recently in this game, nothing to complain about. I just despair at the sheer farcical incompetance that the WRC has not sorted this issue years ago and need somewhere to vent. When I was a kid and my Mother was driving us, my sister and I were allowed to take turns sitting in the front. Is this too complicated for FIA?

    I notice only RG picked both front row drivers on the F1 grid. I thought this would be a bit of a non-week with solid choices getting solid points and not much spread in scores but it is looking more interesting now. However, three of us picked the same six F1 drivers from RBR, Ferrari and McLaren.

  21. This is the downside to the WRC – getting intentional penalties to affect the road position is just crazy. Yet it is allowed within the regulations, or as Loeb said, “we are at the limit of the regulations”.

    I think the FIA shouldn’t announce the next day’s road positions until the last stage of the day has been run. Draw them at random from a tombola on a stage. Got to be better than this.

    Maybe next year I’ll switch the game to the IRC..
