TMR Game 2011: Week 6

Hello and welcome to TMR Game Week 6.

This post accepts entries for the Las Vegas NASCAR Sprint Cup race which is the only event this week.

Housekeeping

Thinking of joining in? If you place your first entry during the first 8 weeks of the game you will receive 80% of the lowest player’s score from any weeks you missed. That brings you into contention whilst applying a small penalty for lateness, the rest is up to you!

Each week you pick 10 drivers with a maximum of 7 from a single championship. This is the last of a run of three NASCAR-only weeks so I’m looking for 7 Cup drivers please.

Email reminders will be sent on Thursdays or Fridays by either myself or Sebastian. Please leave a valid email address in the comment form. If you do not wish to receive reminders please let us know, otherwise we’ll assume we’re okay to send them. Also let us know (privately if you prefer) if you would like to use a different address to the one you use here.

The deadline for entries is Saturday morning at 6am GMT / 1am ET. Read on for results..

After the ups and downs of Daytona it was back to some form of reality for the Cup regulars as the top drivers return to the front. Phoenix is a drivers circuit and Kyle Busch won the support races on Friday and Saturday, he wasn’t so dominant in the Cup race but was there when it mattered – until Gordon powered through for his first win in 2 years!

James and The Speedgeek bring up the rear of those who entered, the leader and the tailender both scoring the same proves that anyone can do it. Andy – you really need to start winning!

James retains the lead. Jackie and The Crooked Cap switch places.  Maverick regains ground lost to the field, and the midfield is very tightly packed. Let’s hope it stays nice and close for a little while longer!

Upcoming Races

NASCAR Sprint Cup (NSC): Kobalt Tools 400, Las Vegas Motor Speedway

This is a quick 1.5 mile tri-oval. Among the IndyCar $5m talk I learned Las Vegas is regarded as a fairly easy oval to drive, very much the opposite of last weekend’s Phoenix oval which requires hard driving. This makes the Nevada race a bit of a lottery.. Entry List.

After this week we have a gap in the schedule where the Bahrain GP used to be, which gives you all time to rest up ahead of the first multi-race weekend of the year the following week – we’ll see races for ALMS (ILMC), MotoGP and NASCAR.

  6. Yuck. Another last place finish of the people who actually submitted a lineup. You remember those TV ads where all different sorts of people looked at the screen and said “I am Tiger Woods”? Well, I am Milka Duno.

    I’ll make my picks later today or tomorrow, but first a question: are we using GrandAm as one of our series this year? Because if so, we’ve got Homestead this weekend. I’d like to believe I can pick the winner of that race (ahem, the car number starts with a “0” and ends with a “1”), so I figured I’d ask.

  7. Scores updated with apologies, and thanks to Sebastian for the spot.

    Speedgeek: GrandAm wasn’t in the plans, it could be though if enough people agree.. The main reasons I didn’t include it was because we’ve got a lot of sportscar already and it is a series I don’t follow (and neither do a big chunk of the game’s entrants), but with United and Blundell involved I may do.
    I’d kind of prefer FIA GT1 though.

  9. Fair enough. GT1 is more unpredictable, anyway, especially since there are only like 11 DPs entered for Homestead (and since one of them is the Ganassi 01, they have about a 50% chance of winning any race). GT1 it is.

    F1, IndyCar, ILMC/ALMS/LMS, MotoGP, NASCAR Cup, DTM.

    What do people think, should we add GrandAm and/or FIA GT1?

    Any of the above. If it gives more options in a quiet week, then I’m fine to add, as long as you’re fine with the workload. I’m not exactly familiar with either series, but that’s sort of the point isn’t it?

    I agree with Jay’s sentiments about it being good to have a look at unfmailiar series but I think there is a good balance at the moment between open and closed-wheel series

  17. Why not leave it as it is? Neither are very major series. GT1 only adds events to busy weeks, and Grand-Am mostly adds to busy weeks, twice only adding to single-event weeks (including this week). Feedback from last year was that sports-car knowledge carried too much weight (under the old rules).

  18. I’m game for picking drivers for series right down to F3, USF2000 or my local short track (Eagle Raceway! America’s Home Track!), but A) I am a huge nerd, and B) I know first hand how adding extra series creates extra work for the guy running the game. Frankly, I think the mix you’ve got now is pretty good, and Sebastian is right that GT1 is a pretty secondary series (for now, anyway) and so is GrandAm (though maybe the new cars for 2012 will change that?). Sorry to muddy the waters by throwing the question out there. I guess I was running a bit on autopilot from last year (which may or may not explain why I am DFL by a large margin in the standings at the moment).

If you did have a competition with a lot more series in it, such that we were often looking at five to ten events a week, the balance of the game would be very effected, in that it would be so often one or two picks per series, with maybe eight or nine of the picks being so obvious that they might be pretty much picked by everyone.

    It will be interesting to see how it works out for Kasey Kahne moving to a better team this season. One to keep an eye on. I am also wondering about the guy he will replace at Hendrick next season, Mark Martin. Has the veteran had an unlucky spell since last season started, or has he just got too old?

  22. Not sure why you’re talking about this race like it’s an unpredictable crapshoot. It’s a cookie cutter track with historically minimal attrition, meaning the results will be roughly a ranking of raw horsepower…

  28. Welcome aboard, Mike.

    Sean, I took that from the IndyCar discussions here and there with drivers saying it is very easy to get up to speed for a newcomer. If that’s the case surely it is easy for everyone else so the number of potential winners increases.. Simplistic I know and there are obviously strong teams/drivers..
