TMR Game 2011 – Week 32

Hello and welcome to TMR Game Week 32.

I’ve been thinking about not continuing the game in 2012. It is fun, but it is quite time-consuming and it would be nice to have time to write blog posts again, the best time for that is Monday/Tuesday nights before the tiredness of a working week takes effect and all I want to do of an evening is mess about on Twitter!

This post accepts entries for these FIVE events, including a new IndyCar/ALMS double-header on a Baltimore street course:

Well done Felipe, a dominant win with a big F1 score only beaten by Gavin. Mav is 2nd with a focus on MotoGP, with Sebastian taking out the final podium spot with a more mixed approach.

A very tightly packed midfield. I’ve left any ties ranked in the order Excel left them when I sorted by total score.

Dylan found more bad luck and would’ve been more competitive had it not been for the misfortunes of Lewis Hamilton and Tony Kanaan, who both ought to have scored fairly well.

Sebastian closes the lead gap a little. Andy creeps ever so closer to me. Felipe made a big gain points terms if not positions and now sits just 16 behind Andy.

 

Races This Week

DTM Brands Hatch

This is on the short ‘Indy’ circuit not the full GP track so the laps come around fast, almost at oval laptimes. Sadly the place is too narrow so you rarely see position changes on the racetrack with cars this fast at this track, it’ll come down to pit strategy and crash damage.

NASCAR Cup Atlanta

This track used to have two Cup races each year but has dropped to just the one, and from what I remember from Spring 2010 it was quite a boring race despite being one of the fastest on Cup’s calendar. Pick your superspeedway guys or make the most of the other four events.

MotoGP Misano

The San Marino round is held at Misano in Italy, perhaps defined by the fast back straight kink leading into the twisty run to home. Current form suggests it would be hard to bet against Honda.

IndyCar Baltimore

I don’t know what to expect from this track, it is a street track and the map suggests it is quite twisty in places yet fast in others. I have no idea of the width of it. Of note is that the start/finish is one place and the pitlane is halfway around the track somewhere else entirely.
With the way Race Control has been acting lately it could be risky to take a gamble with picks.

ALMS Baltimore

As above, but again for this series expect the prototype count to be low until Petit Le Mans. The question here is whether the top guys will be affected by the nature of street circuit racing and that’s something of a lottery. Entry list.

    I’d be bummed if you discontinued the game for 2012, but I totally would understand if you did. It’s a lot of work, and can really take away time from other things you want to do. It’s been fun while we’ve done it, right?

  6. Yay! Finally a good result (and a great one)!

    Playing my first season in the TMR Game has been fun and I think it´s a neat idea, but I understand it is a lot of work, so I agree that if it is taking a lot of time that could be used in something that you would like to do, then it would be right to stop it.

  8. What happened? It would actually make no difference to anybody’s score if you did score him sixth.

    Race Control penalised him for breaking their ‘no blocking’ rule, except he didn’t block he defended – which they call blocking.

  12. I’d really miss the game if you were to stop it Pat but I appreciate it must be a tremendous amount of work for you and Sebastian… is there any way we could alternate who writes the posts for the game? Could you have say 3 guest authors who write the post once a month or have you had enough?

  15. I don’t know if it is the workload as much as the fact it is so repetitive. I do scores on a Monday night, it takes a couple of hours. I usually do the blog post on a Tuesday which doesn’t take too long, I only separate it because I don’t have the attention span to do the scores plus the blog post in one go. Then have to spend Thursdays and Fridays making sure people enter because they forget. After 32 weeks I just get worn down by it and it would feel nice to not be tied to something!

    The fun part is entering the results in the spreadsheet and watching it all unfold. What’s not fun is the general admin.

    And it would be nice to have a weekly or fortnightly column on a Tuesday. I want to make this a blog again.

    Been there done that.
    No point doing it if you’re not enjoying it. As much as I enjoy the game, I’d like to see more blog stuff anyway.
    Put it this way, you’re either doing the right thing or you need to change the blog name… TMTMRG is just starting to sound silly though.

  18. NASCAR event delayed until Tuesday!

    Pat, would you blog more if you gave up the game? You seem to have lost your enthusiasm for it. I know myself how wanting to write stuff becomes thinking I should, but never today. Both of us, if it was something we wanted to do, then we would blog because we wanted to. If you are fed up of doing the game, then call time on it, but if you are not otherwise blogging the rest of the week, I suggest that may be a deeper issue.

I think I would because my enthusasm for blogging is at its height on a Monday/Tuesday – after a race weekend but before I’ve been worn down by work (I always struggle to write anything on a Thursday/Friday). By the time I’ve worked the numbers any desire to write anything has gone, which is the main reason I don’t write the game results blog post straight after doing the spreadsheet.

    This week I was free on Sunday evening so I put together some scores then, which means I can write something tonight. I may choose to post it after the scores tomorrow though because I can’t stand having the game take precedence as the lead item all week, it was only ever supposed to be a ‘thing on the side’ and now it has consumed the whole site.

    Ultimately I don’t want the blog to be a job or a chore. I already have those! Well, that’s unless I can make a living from it and cut back hours at work, but I don’t think I have enough opinions, and the world and his dog already does race reports. đŸ™‚
