IMSA Prototype Challenge

I have already covered the dates for the main IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship, the headline series among IMSA’s roster. This blog posts covers two of the main support series.

IMSA Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge:

A series of two-hour races for GT4, TCR and ST cars, with a couple of key venues hosting double-length four-hour enduros. GT4 cars within the Grand Sport (GS) class are the headliners, the ST class long providing fantastic racing and TCR promising more.

IMSA Prototype Challenge presented by Mazda:

A series of 1 hour 45 minute races for LMP3 and MPC cars. This series last year ran several 45 minute sprint races and introduced LMP3 as its top class. This year the cars can stretch their endurance legs.

Other Supports:

IMSA also sanctions many high profile one-make series including the Ferrari Challenge North America, Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America, Porsche Challenge USA and Porsche Challenge Canada. I do not offer calendars for these series but the dates are available to view at www.imsa.com.

What’s Changed?

Returning or New:

  • Continental Tire Challenge now includes a class for TCR cars;
  • Prototype Challenge races are now single races of 1hr45m each, rather than two short sprints.
  • PC Round 1 is now at the Roar Before The 24 on January 7th
  • PC goes to Barber Motorsports Park in support of IndyCar.

In Conti Challenge, the lead class (GS) is primarily for GT4 cars and looks to be a great success with bigger numbers this year. New for this year is the globally popular TCR class, of similar performance to GT4 but touring car in style.

Unfortunately the excellent Street Tuner (ST) base class has taken a big hit. This was a great low cost touring car formula which very recently had huge grids and great racing through the field – at the time of writing the Roar Before The 24 Test has only 5 entries, which is a huge shame, I hope it picks up again.

Over in Prototype Challenge, the big change this year is the switch to mini-enduro 1hr45min races, a great format for LMP3 cars which resembles the Le Mans Cup for Europe. The old MPC cars are retained as a lower cost entry point. This looks to be a great foundation for the future.
